In early 2024, the UOW College Australia welcomed a group of students from Maple Leaf Primary and High School, China, as part of their cultural Study Tour program.
This visit marked another chapter in the longstanding relationship between Maple Leaf and UOW College, which has been fostering cultural exchanges and educational opportunities since 2010.
Language learning and academic exploration
Upon arrival, the 79 students started their English classes, immersing themselves in language learning and cross-cultural communication. Beyond the classroom, the students explored Australian culture and the beauty of the Wollongong region.
Discovering Australian icons and wildlife
The itinerary for the group was carefully curated to provide both a learning and cultural experience. The students toured the picturesque University of Wollongong campus, where they experienced first-hand university life in Australia. They also ventured to iconic Australian landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the world-renowned Sydney Opera House.
For many students, an unforgettable highlight of their trip was a visit to Symbio Wildlife Park, where they encountered native Australian fauna up-close. From koalas to snakes, they gained insights into Australia's unique biodiversity and conservation efforts, fostering a deeper appreciation for the country's natural heritage.
Exploring Indigenous culture and environmental awareness
An Australian Aboriginal dance ceremony by Gadhungalmarring at Jervis Bay provided a glimpse into Indigenous Australian culture, as students were welcomed to the country with a traditional smoking ceremony. Additionally, they received valuable lessons on beach safety from local surf life-saving volunteers, allowing them to enjoy the pristine coastline of Wollongong with confidence and respect for the environment.
Experience the Australian lifestyle through homestay
However, perhaps the most rewarding aspect of their journey was the homestay experience. Living with local host families offered the students a genuine immersion into Australian household life. Sharing meals, engaging in conversations, and participating in everyday activities allowed them to forge meaningful connections and gain insights into Australian customs and traditions.
Reflections on an unforgettable experience
As the trip concluded, the students reflected on their transformative experience, expressing gratitude for the hospitality and warmth extended to them by their hosts and the UOW College staff.
One staff member remarked, "Your team are professionals and experts, making this program run so smoothly and my job there much easier. And thank you so much for taking care of our students.”
The journey of Maple Leaf students was a celebration of cultural exchange, friendship, and personal growth. Through this immersive experience, these students have not only expanded their horizons but have also formed lifelong memories and bonds that transcend borders.
